A recent Valet article reminded men about that old tune: we love seeing our women in our clothes.   I don’t think I need to explain.  Just think of high school and all the cold morning hoodies we’ve never seen again in the name of getting her to crush on you back.

But even recently, there’s been a surge of women taking men’s classics out the front door.  And as usual, they beat us at our own game.  With a spectrum from Sarah Ann Murray‘s rakish overtones to Lauren Yates‘ baggy & beautiful throwbacks, the fairer sex can cut into a male silhouette with disarming effectiveness.

Saturday afternoon, the Missus and I put theory to practice with my new Red Cloud R400s (article about these bad boys coming soon), AllSaints Spitalfields hunting shirt, and hand-me-down Timberlands.  As expected, she outmacked her mack daddy.  After reviewing the photos, I think I know why.

Girls really know how to have fun in boys’ clothes.  They know they’re playing dress-up, so they’ll pantomime their man’s John Wayne boot tap, stuff their hands into tight riveted pockets, and flash that shit-eating “This is what you look like” grin.  And laugh all the way to the bank in your tabs.

Because girls are going to have fun in boys’ clothes.  When I’m trying to perfectly stuff a pocket square with “effortless” flair, or fail the second attempt at an askew tie knot, I have to stop and think that you choose what you wear; therefore, fussing over or having fun with it rests entirely on your shoulders.  Throw pretense out the wardrobe and just enjoy the layers of cloth you decided to patch on.   And that’s when you feel comfortable.  Looking great will just be the follow-through.
