Rules to Learn . . . and Bend

The Average Joe

Like I’ve said before, since I’m new to the study of men’s clothing, it’s worth learning the classics, first and foremost.  Literature has the Greeks, Karate has paint the fence, and men’s dress has Alan Flusser.

Of Mr. Flusser’s work, nothing seems more essential than Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion.

“Permanent fashion?”  Like many, I thought perhaps his definition of both terms differed from mine, because a man who penned a definitive guide to clothing wouldn’t make such a mistake as calling fashion permanent.  But don’t worry, he dives into this curious subtitle 14 pages in.

I also approached this book with a bit of trepidation.  With such a lack of basic knowledge and history of the subject, what if, after the last page is read, I marry myself to strict clothing rules from head to toecap?  Will I start throwing derisive red flags at my less style-conscious friends?  Far worse, always the law-abiding citizen, will I defer my own ideas in favor of the sartorial speed limit?

Mr. Flusser, in his erudite wisdom, replies:

Some may feel that establishing rules for good taste may inhibit self-expression.  It’s my opinion that they provide the only chance for genuine individuality.  Real innovation has always taken place with an awareness of, rather than an ignorance of, the rules.  After all, how can you push the envelope if there is no envelope to push?  Knowing the basics of setting a proper table or writing a decent letter prevents getting bogged down in the small stuff.  Finally, good form makes for a level playing field on which excellence has real meaning.

– Chapter one, Permanent Fashion

Excuse me while I look for an envelope.
